Please Share and Read.... Long but IMPORTANT!!! This is Anastasias freedom story... This girl has spent almost the past 9 months in a rural No Kill county shelter in SC (thanks goodness since she wouldnt have made it that long at a high kill shelter - maybe 15 days there before being put down)... last weekend a foster for our PA rescue chose her from a list of dog pics and agreed to take her into her home until a permanent home could be found... We then contacted the shelter and agreed to have her pulled and placed on northbound transport (which happens there every two weeks from this particular)... so Ana made a trip to the vet Thursday to be checked out and was given a travel health certificate and transport was confirmed... Saturday morning at 6 AM Ana and 25 other dogs and puppies being rescued or adopted from this one shelter boarded a volunteers van and headed north where they met 4 more volunteers and were split up into their everyday vehicles and continued north... all together the 26 pups met 10 different volunteers each as 29 volunteers each drove 1 to 1 1/2 hours and handed off to the next... by 8PM all had arrived to the Day 1 ending point in Baltimore MD... from there some were picked up by their adopters, some by volunteers who would house them for the night as they would head further north on Sunday and Ana hitched a ride with yet one more volunteer who drove her to Westminster MD to meet our rescue... Our rescuer drove her the last leg to Adams County PA! Each step of the way she was loved and cared for by a volunteer Weekend Warrior as we call them then took a potty and water break and hopped into another volunteers vehicle for the next leg of the trip... After a LONG day she finally filled her belly and FINALLY slept on a warm bed in a warm building! Sunday she awoke to more food, more warmth and lots of attention! Some of the others in the group awoke to another day of driving with 14 more volunteers getting each pup as far north as Buffalo NY! These 26 pups are all now safe and sound tonight and have had their freedom ride out of the shelter thanks to the shelter staff and volunteers, rescuers, fosters and OF COURSE the transport volunteers and coordinators. This week while Ana visits a local vet and heads to her foster home the volunteers will begin planning to do it all again in 2 more weeks. Some will drive again and some will be unavailable and others that couldnt drive this weekend will help out next time. These wonderful people make this happen across this country by the hundreds if not thousands every week for no other reason than to do a part in saving these unfortunate souls who ended up in a bad place for no good reason of their own doing. Her story will end in a few weeks or months at worst when an adopter will fall in love with her picture or meet her at an event and will take her to her forever home where she will be treated like a member of a family and will live out her days with a purpose and with love and care from yet one more group of caring souls :0) We can always use help with any step of this process from volunteers at the local shelter to transporters to rescuers to fosters and to adopters!!! Get in touch with us to find out how you can help here or we will get you contacts in your area! We are part of a large network of rescuers who do this daily all over this great land of freedom and we can always use some extra help!
