Please attend on Wednesday! Press Conference at City Hall on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, Noon Who: Council members Crowley and Johnson and other animal advocates What: Press Conference in support of Intros. 55A, 73A, 136A, and 146A – Collectively referred to as the Puppy Mill/Pet Store reform package When: Wednesday, December 17th at 12 noon (please arrive a few minutes before ). The event should end by 1 p.m. Where: Steps of City Hall (located at 260 Broadway- conveniently located off the WTC stop on the E train or Chambers stop on the A train) The four proposals (Intro. 55-A, Intro. 73A, & Intros. 136-A and 146-A) would do several things: help ensure that NYC pet shops don’t sell dogs and cats from breeders who fail to meet even the most basic care standards, as well as require NYC pet shops to disclose critical information to customers about the origins of the dogs and cats they sell. The legislation would also change the definition of pets shop in the Animal Abuse Registration Act to include pet shops that sell cats and dogs, and require that any dogs and cats sold at city pet shops are spayed/neutered and microchipped and all dogs are licensed prior to sale. Spaying and neutering animals sold in pet shops is critical to reducing pet homelessness; microchipping is essential to reuniting lost pets with owners; and licensing not only helps ensure the safety of pets and the public, but also generates much-needed revenue for the New York City’s shelter system.
