And not being able to hear clearly is very isolating. I wear hearing aids since a bout of flu left me with impaired hearing to the point where I was very unhappy at social events because I couldnt follow conversations held against background noise and so felt isolated in a sea of vague sounds. I used to love quizzes but could no longer hear the questions or the quiet discussion around the table. Watching television was no better. I like period dramas but dark rooms and hats that cast shadows across faces meant i couldnt lipread enough to add to what I could hear. I kept having to ask people to repeat what they said especially if they werent facing me, didnt hear the phone ringing if there was any other noise etc etc. I took the plunge and bought some (very expensive) hearing aids which have changed my life.I would like to raise awareness of the fact that many people just cannot afford the aids that they need and see if we as a community can do something to help.
