Nerstroms car is not with him and his handgun is missing. Hes believed to have left his Libertyville home on foot. Police say hes not a danger to anyone else, but he might be to himself. Just come home, I need you Dan. I will come to you, said Kim Nerstrom, Daniels mother. Fighting through tears, Nerstroms mother made an emotional plea for her sons safe return. Its been 11 days since the army veteran was last seen. Police said Nerstrom walked out of his Libertyville home shortly after sunset on Monday, December 1st. We need our boy home, said Kim. We just need to get some word that hes ok and well go from there, said Douglas Nerstrom, Daniels father. Nerstroms parents said the Iraqi war veteran was battling post traumatic stress disorder and sought help on several occasions. Hes always gone to the VA and it just seemed like it never got any better, if anything it was on the slow decline, said Douglas. We will get you the help, it will not be a VA, we will get your private help, just come home Dan, just call Dan, Kim added. Libertyville Police said within 24 hours of Nerstroms disappearance, they launched a helicopter and deployed bloodhounds. FOX 32 News has learned the hound dogs picked up Nerstroms scent in an area east of the police station, an area he may have passed through. On Friday, Libertyville Police deployed three detectives, five cadaver dogs and their handlers to wooded areas near Lake Minear Beach. Daniel just come home, just call if you cant reach out right now to me, reach out to someone, please Dan, said Kim. Let somebody know that youre ok, said Nerstroms father. On Facebook, nearly 5,000 people are following updates on the Bring Home Dan Nerstrom community page. The Facebook page shows pictures of Nerstrom in his uniform, in fatigues, and with his loved ones. Everyone is hoping for Nerstroms safe return, especially his girlfriend and her son, who he is a father figure to. All inquiries on his Facebook page are being directed to the Libertyville Police. The page also links to a GoFundMe page in which friends are trying to raise money to get Nerstrom medical help if they can find him. Authorities are also combing through his financial history for any clues that might aid in their search. A flyer on Nerstroms front door says he served in Iraq from 2005 to 2006. He was a highly trained scout and medically retired.
