For friends who arent in the art world, artists frequently need to bring a sizable amount of funding to the table in order to get their work published in a book format. They raise funds through a pre-sales of their books and/or through crowd-sourced campaign. Not all publishers require artists to fund their own publication projects, but it is a very common practice, particularly with projects that tackle difficult subjects that likely hold little commercial appeal with mainstream audiences. Daniels proposed book project is an important one since it takes an honest look at his family history of domestic violence and suicide. Both Coburn and his family members who have agreed to be photographed for his project are incredibly brave. Through combining hauntingly beautiful and disturbing images created by Coburn as well as vintage vernacular snapshots of other families, Coburn creates a new type of family album that depicts the reality of his familys history instead of a sanitized version designed to perpetuate the myth of the perfect family.
