Please do not be taken in by hospital manager’s spin as they are - TopicsExpress

Please do not be taken in by hospital manager’s spin as they are keep saying that-- ‘West Cumbria getting new hospital, there will be thousand of out patient appointment, hundreds of planned operations, all the scan facilities (Incidentally there is no plan to install MRI scan at new built WCH)’ As there is big gap between, what people of west Cumbria needs, and what Hospital managers want to provide. What managers are trying to do is to divert the attention and emphasis from emergency operation and treatment, to planned operations (Which is the operation when you go on waiting list, like Carpal Tunnel operation, cataract, hip replacement and knee replacement) What we, in west Cumbria need, is emergency treatment ( operation for broken wrist, broken hip bone, broken ankles, appendix operation, treatment for infection , treatment for asthma, bleeding from stomach, consultant led maternity etc) if we have these emergency treatment, than chances are that staff which provides emergency treatment will also provide planned operation, as it is the same operation theater, same medical team, same nursing team look after the patient whether it is emergency operation or planned operation. Difference between emergency operation and planned operation is, that in emergency you have no time to travel, or very little time to travel to hospital for treatment, while for planned operation you have time to organize yourself, and also there is time for hospital to arrange for treatment for some another day, and that is the reason that they can afford to say to you that, your planned operation is cancelled to day, without fear of harming you. Before new management came in, WCH use to provide both type of care, emergency treatment, and planned operation. What present management trying to do is to provide planned operation only, at WCH and no emergency treatment at WCH.(Though they say there will be 24/7 A & E department at WCH, it is like having a front door of the house but no house behind it) but there will not be other emergency operations or admissions at WCH, While CIC in Carlisle, will have it all, emergency treatment and operation and planned treatment and operation, complex high risk surgery, Stroke, Cancer treatment, Heart attack treatment, intensive care, all Trauma (Broken bones surgery), all general surgical emergency operation like sore tummy, appendix operation etc, Vascular operation like aneurysm operation, consultant led maternity, special care baby unit, Paediatrician, (Child specialist) on call 24/7 in children’s ward. CIC does not have capacity to accommodate all these, and they are relying on patient traveling from Carlisle CIC to Whitehaven WCH for planned operation, but CQC report clearly indicate that patients from Carlisle does not want to travel to Whitehaven for operation as it is too far. So patient from Carlisle will have that choice, they can afford to wait to be treated at CIC in Carlisle, and they also will have a choice, to travel somewhere else for their planned treatment, while patient from west Cumbria will not have that choice, as it is emergency operation and treatment, and they all will have to travel to CIC, no matter what, as in emergency patients does not have luxury of waiting, or time to travel some where else. This is very clearly suggesting, limited access, and limited choices of health care, for people of west Cumbria.
