Please do not choose your pets by their expense or by sudden impulse, they are not a fashion accessory or latest trend. However think of what you can give them and they can give you, choose with your heart and generosity. So many animals are put to death because they were impulse buys, when they could have had long lives with happy families. But they were bred as someones livelihood. Then possibly purchased with as little forethought, to be discarded without thought condemned to an early death. They were misfortunate to have been born looking cute as a puppy or kitten. Then as the first love wore off, the gate or door is left deliberately open or are driven miles from their adopted home and dumped. Then, they like our teenagers are left to find a life on the streets. When you think of adding a pet to your family, put as much thought into it as when you PLAN your family, (child or pet), dont let it be by accident or impulse they deserve more, SO MUCH MORE. It is hoped that we try not to repeat the mistakes of previous generations, think of what you want to be and to give in life, what you want to contribute and be remembered for. Our pets, like our children do not ask to be a part of your family, they just hope to be given care, time, attention and if they are really lucky a loving home. In todays world we hear endlessly of saving the environment, or a specific species, the underprivileged, abused, but we hear little of our closest friends and companions the household pet, the companion. We are not pure breds - to be honest most of us are mongrels by birth (or behaviour), in Australia most of us are from convict stock. So why do we insist that our pets, or our children whom we too often ignore should be perfect - judged by their cost, (expensive is not a guarantee of quality) or their lineage. Our old, infirm, our children, teens and our animals are discarded too easily when they are problematic or no longer suit us, I hope we wake up to what we throw away so carelessly, before it is too late.
