Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the Lower West, South West, South Coastal, Great Southern and Central Wheat Belt forecast districts Issued at 11:01 am WST on Tuesday 16 July 2013. For people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Mount Jackson to Kalgoorlie to Norseman to Katanning to Albany. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Perth, Mandurah, York, Southern Cross, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown and Albany. Weather Situation A deep low pressure system is expected to approach the southwest of the state during Tuesday morning, moving south of the south coast later on Tuesday, resulting in squally conditions about the southwest of the state from late Tuesday morning and continuing through the afternoon and evening. The weather system is likely to cause WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. In isolated areas DANGEROUS GUSTS in excess of 125 kilometres per hour could cause SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. Squally showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during Tuesday morning. DAMAGING WINDS are likely in the area north of Bunbury and extending to the remainder during the afternoon and evening. People in the southwest of WA experience a front as windy as this about 5 times per year. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm WST Tuesday.
