Please forgive me, Im an engineer and I cant help myself.... The NFL rulebook is very clear on the dimensions of the league football. The language of the rulebook for inflation pressure is relatively clear, it specifies 12.5-13.5 pounds which is generally understood to mean pounds per square inch gauge. The rulebook section linked from the NFL website is entirely silent on the ambient temperature when the ball is inflated and when or if it is subsequently checked. Once I read the rulebook I did some calculations. It turns out that a regulation football of 264 cubic inches inflated to minimum allowable pressure of 12.5 pounds per square inch gauge in a 70 degree Fahrenheit equipment room will measure 10.1 pounds per square inch gauge if it is cooled to 40 degrees Fahrenheit on the field of play and will no longer comply with the rulebook. Bottom Line Patriots Haters - you are accusing the Patriots of cheating based on an unenforceable rule Patriots Fans - unfortunately because of the rule language theres no real way to close the door on deflategate unless someone has seen results of the NFLs investigation where the temperature of the football at time of inflation, at game time, and at time of investigation was also reported. In related news, I probably need a new hobby.
