Please help us repair Pedlers leg - He deserves a life free of pain! Facebook Fans: Remember Pedler, the dog who while at the shelter would talk to the camera as if to say please get me out of here? Thanks to our awesome fans, we were able to pull him into our foster program and get him vetted through the funds that YOU pledged. Well, Pedler needs your help again desperately. We noticed that Pedler seemed to favor one back leg over the other. We had him seen by a vet and we received devastating news. The head to the largest bone in Pedlers leg (the femur) and the socket where the femur fits into the pelvis is, according to the veterinarian, a disaster. It looks to be something called vascular necrosis due to an old injury. Vascular necrosis occurs when blood flow stops to the area, and the bone cannot regrow and heal. Pedlers femur is very brittle and is about to break on its own. The veterinarian said that this could be a genetic condition, or it could be an old injury caused by trauma (e.g., being hit by a car, or kicked). This poor boy also has bone spurs in his pelvis, right where the necrotic femur goes into the socket. We will never know the cause of his current condition since Pedler was dumped at the shelter. What we DO know is that Pedler needs a femoral head ostectomy to remove the dying bone and to prevent a devastating break which would cause our rescue to have to make a very difficult decision about Pedlers quality of life. Those who have worked with Pedler will tell you that he is an AMAZING dog, with so much love to give. The vet says that Pedler is in constant pain every day of his life, but you would never know by looking at him. She says that while she was examining his leg, Pedler did not show one sign of aggression toward her, and she was impressed not just by his tolerance for pain, but for his patience with the human who was touching his damaged leg. The volunteer who took Pedler to the vet said that, while waiting for his appointment, he wanted to be friends with every dog who came through the door! He is a happy, young dog. Pedlers quality of life will go downhill quickly if we cannot raise the funds for his surgery. This vets office is giving Cauzican a rescue rate for this major procedure that is more than 50% off the normal rate, and we are so grateful to them for their compassion toward a dog that is in serious need of medical care (we recognize that they too need to pay their staff and their bills and therefore cannot do the surgery for free). This rate also includes post-surgery rehabilitation for Pedler, which demonstrates just how reasonable the cost is. Pedler deserves the chance to be a normal dog and live a life without pain.
