Please help us welcome Lewis and Clark to NBS Animal Rescue! Lewis and Clark were found as strays by the amazing Warren Animal Control Officer Lisa Taylor who reached out to us asking for immediate help for these two babies. We dropped everything and ran over to meet Officer Taylor only to meet two of the most severely matted and malnourished dogs we have ever encountered. We immediately contacted our veterinary partners to set up a wellness appointment for them and then set to work in freeing these little pups from their tangled matted fur. Both dogs were so badly matted that they had 2 inch thick mats along their backs, necks, and feet; their tails were covered in layers of feces, and their poor bellys and manhood was caked with urine and infected. The matting was so bad that neither dog could walk properly - the fur was matted effectively tying their back legs together. We are so incredibly grateful for the amazing kindness Dr. Joswick showed these two as she graciously agreed to slide these two into her evening appointments to check them over. As we waited for our evening appointment to arrive, Lewis and Clark had a small amount of food and water and were so amazingly wonderful as two of our volunteers spent a total of 5 hours trying to gently cut the mats from their bodies. Until we were about 1/2 way through cutting them free of the fur and sticks that had bound their little legs together we didnt even know if these sweethearts were males or females! Both Lewis and Clark let us gently roll them over, touch their little legs and paws to do the best that we could to free them from the extreme mats. Despite being incredibly scared of their situation, neither pup ever so much as curled a lip at us as we gently tried to help them. After getting them cleaned up a bit it was clear that not only were they terrified of their situation, but they also had very different concerns with their ability to walk. Lewis was unable to put weight on his hind right leg (the one with a massive tightly wound mat around his knee joint), and Clark was so weak and lacked muscle tone that he could barely stand up without his legs sliding out from under him. We no sooner cut the last of the major mats from Clarks back leg and neck that we had to leave for their doggy doctor appointment. Both boys weigh only about 3 1/2 lbs and need to put on some weight. We opted to do some blood work on Lewis, the smaller of the two pups to make sure that his levels were OK. Dr. Joswick estimates that these boys are about 5 years old and said that both of their little hearts and lungs sounded wonderful! Other than needing to gain some weight and get some fluid in his system, Clark was given a clean bill of health other than the broken tail in two places that had healed crookedly. Sweet little Lewis however needs surgery...His hind leg that he is unable to bear weight on has a very severe knee injury that has caused his knee cap to be completely out of place and his tibia (lower leg bone) to rotate in an very odd position causing a knobby knee joint and joint pain. He also has a less severe luxating patella on the other knee that also needs to be repaired. After a consult with the veterinary magician himself, Dr. Wilson believes that he can help Lewis achieve a stable legs through surgery. Lewis surgery costs are estimated to be approximately $1200-$1600 with the need of follow up care and hydrotherapy to strengthen his muscles. We are going to need a lot of support for this little sweetheart so that he can get the help he needs. If you are able to donate towards his care, please visit our website at nbsar.org and click on the Donate! button. Stay tuned for more information about an upcoming fundraiser for little Lewis! Many thanks to our good friends at Bingo Pet Salon for their help in getting these two sweethearts bathed and groomed to even out their fur and trim their ridiculously long nails. We are so thankful for all of your help!! Stay tuned tomorrow for their after photos to post! These two fur-babies are super shy and nervous after their big day at the vet and groomer so we wanted to give them a few days to settle in with their foster parents before their photo shoot debut! You can help these two sweethearts by SHARING their story on your page. If everyone who sees their story could donate just $2.00 to our Paypal account, $1 donation for each sweet pup, we could cover both dogs medical needs in no time! Visit our website to make a quick $2 donation to help Lewis and Clark: nbsanimalrescue/donate-now/ Thank-you for sharing their story!! Lets help get these sweet fellas the medical care they need - $2 at a time! :-) Thank-you for supporting these two sweethearts when so many have chosen to look the other way in their short lives.
