Please, if you have the time, watch #NigelLattas documentary about Education which was on TVNZ last night. This Government have spent much of their time running down Education, Teachers and Educators. Why do they have an agenda to tell the public there are major problems with education? It is all about control. National have created a problem so they can enforce rules to fix it. Why do they want to fix education? So they can control the education sector. Teacher unions are still some of the strongest unions in the country. Why, because they represent the teachers and teachers are at the coal face when working with your kids. Watch this program and see how many times Nigel Lattas conclusions differ from Nationals plans for education. He explains why National ideas are wrong. (Without directly referencing National but you can read between the lines) Nationals, national standards are fundamentally wrong. Based on formulaic levels achievement not on learning achievement. And based on old school thinking. Learning is far far more creative than the narrow minded, number pushing, National Government want you to believe. It is about problem solving, not straight line thinking. Its about learning creative ways to think about solving problems, not about formulaic paper pushing answers. Unfortunately that is how National think about education. National standards are based around outcomes that are negative to schools, teachers and the education system in general. They want to run schools like businesses, pouring millions into middle management and away from the teacher / student relationship. They have made cuts after cuts to special needs, devalued creativity, devalued teachers and devalued the education system in general. For me the way National have treated education is a good enough reason to have them gone. But really it is only one indicator of a group of people with limited values, limited vision and hopefully a limited time left in power. Please watch tvnz.co.nz/nigel_latta/video
