Thursday, October 17, 4:30pm, Swift Hall room 106 1025 East 58th Street, Chicago, IL 60637 Jawad Qureshi: “Ibn al-Arabis Fusus al-Hikam in the Deobandi Maslak” Description: This paper studies the reception of Ibn al-Arabis Fusus al-hikam in the thought of a prominent leader of the revivalist Deoband maslak, Ashraf Ali Thanawi (d. 1943) through examining the latters commentary on the Fusus--al-Hall al-Aqwam li aqd Fusus al-hikam. To this end, I first ask examine the question of what constitutes a maslak, a uniquely South Asian way of identifying various formations of Muslim religious identity from the 19th century to the present. I then posit a number of discursive features of the Deobandi maslak and from there focus on Thanawis commentary. What emerges is a reformist imperative that extends not merely to individual, society, and thought, but also to metaphysical teachings and the authority of revered figures in the tradition. This imperative however is not iconoclastic in nature but rather emphasizes continuity with tradition while allowing room for reform and critique.
