Please join me in thanking City Workers for their service. When I became Mayor we faced a $58M deficit and city employees agreed to furlough days equivalent to 9% of their pay to prevent layoffs and preserve services during the recession. Now Oakland is booming, but staffing has about 600 less employees. Yet during the recent storms, demonstrations, and challenges to maintain services for those who are still hard hit by the economy...City workers work long hours above and beyond. For the first time in many years we held a ceremony yesterday to honor workers who have served the City from 20 to 42 years! City Administrator Henry Gardner and I joined Department Leaders to serve desserts and distribute -- about 200 received certificates of thanks and our tree pins. Happy Holidays to our entire City Family.
