Please join the Portland Art Museum’s monthly tour for the visually impaired on Thursday, June 19 as they explore the Paris Tuileries. Commissioned by Catherine de Medici in 1564 to enhance her new palace, the park took over terrain previously occupied by tile workshops, or tuileries - hence the name. King Louis XIV and Emperor Napoleon III further enhanced the gardens with magnificent vistas, esplanades, hedges, flower beds, terraces, wooded lots, water features, and dozens of sculptures. Today the Tuileries, which adjoins the Louvre Museum, is administered by the Louvre as a centerpiece of French art and culture. This special exhibit, on loan from Paris to the Portland Art Museum for the summer, intertwines French culture, history and art, and highlights the remarkable development of photography in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The one-hour tour begins at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19. Participants assemble at the museum’s main entrance, 1219 SW Park Avenue, Portland. (Those requiring a ramp should come in at the Members Entrance on the north side of the building.) The tour is free with museum membership. Non-museum members who are visually impaired pay $3 for museum admission and may bring in one helper at no charge. Children 17 and under are free. Seating is provided, and guide dogs are welcome. Please let them know if you will attend the tour by calling and leaving a message at 503-276-4290.
