Please join us for a special viewing of select items from The Allan Gray Family Personal Papers of Alvin Ailey Featuring remarks by Allan Gray PROGRAM Monday, August 19, 2013 3 p.m. Black Archives of Mid-America 1722 E. 17th Terrace RSVP [email protected] or 816.701.3612 Alvin Ailey was one of the seminal figures in American choreography in the 20th century. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was founded in New York in 1958 and grew into a large and celebrated company, prompting Ailey to begin considering a second home. Civic leaders and arts organizations actively encouraged Ailey to choose Kansas City; and today, the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, founded in 1984, serves as the official second home to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Having these important documents housed at the Black Archives of Mid-America reinforces the important role Kansas City played both in the life of Alvin Ailey and the history of African-American dance.
