Please join us tomorrow, January 26th, for our first Brown Bag Lecture of 2015 spring semester at Noon in Hester Hall Room 145 Our esteemed speaker will be Professor Samer Shehata. Observing Tunisias Presidential Election: Democratization in a region in turmoil Samer Shehata recently served on the Carter Center’s Election Observation mission for the Tunisian presidential elections in December 2014. Tunisia’s historic presidential elections took place over two rounds, on November 23 and December 21. This was the country’s first presidential election since the ouster of Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, which marked the beginning of the Arab “Spring.” Shehata will discuss the politics of the Tunisian elections and his experiences as an election observer. Samer S. Shehata is Associate Professor of Middle East studies in the Department of International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma. He has previously taught at the American University in Cairo, Columbia University, New York University, and Georgetown University. Dr. Shehata has also testified before the House Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations in the United States Congress.
