Please keep water meters accessible in a safe environment to facilitate upcoming readings - Liverpool Plains Shire Council (LPSC) is about to commence the next round of water meter readings and is seeking the co-operation of homeowners to ensure the meters are accessible and can be read quickly without any risk of injury to the readers. “Council has a power of entry to undertake water meter readings and under current regulations consumers are required to maintain access for this purpose. Council does not undertake estimated readings like the electricity retailers do and imposes a fee for return visits to read meters that are not accessible,” said LPSC Water Services Manager, Rod Batterham. Mr Batterham said homeowners can expedite the reading of meters and avoid a return fee by following these steps: • Maintain a clear area with no bushes within 1 metre of the water meter - thorny bushes, roses etc. and long grass should be cut back to allow 1 metre all round clear access. • Areas above the meter should be clear for 2 metres. • Meters in boxes should be clearly sign posted for identification. • Do not place any items, for example pot plants, on top of meter boxes. • Protect your meter. They have been supplied with tyres for prevention of freezing in winter. Repairs to meters found damaged by frost, without a tyre, will be invoiced to the consumer. • Remember - keeping water meters clear also allows the consumer to utilise the readings for their own purposes in matters such as leak detection. • Remember - Consumers also need access to the isolation valve at the meter to stop water during leaks and to change tap washers etc. • Dogs should be confined to rear yards, away from the meter, or on a chain during water meter readings periods to avoid the fee if a return visit is required. “Please keep in mind that water meter readings are carried out every 3 months so this is an ongoing requirement,” Mr Batterham said. “Should your tyre for prevention of frost damage be lost please contact Council on 6746 1755 to arrange a replacement free of charge,” he continued. “It is in the interests of homeowners to ensure their meters can be read on the first visit and LPSC thanks all concerned for their co-operation,” Mr Batterham concluded.
