Please let me preface this story Im going to tell you about this happening from yesterday late afternoon with this most strongly worded admonition: AS YOU TRAVERSE THIS WORLD, LET NO INDIVIDUAL STEAL YOUR JOY! I was sitting at the bar in the Commodore’s Club having a drink in early evening before I heading to my stateroom to get ready for dinner. I had ordered a martini with olives from the barman and was gazing fondly at the delicious looking and plump green stuffed olives, when a man came up next to me. He ordered a drink and turned to me and said, “you look like you’re enjoying that martini just by looking at it.” I laughed heartily and told him that I tried to employ all my senses in the enjoyment of life. He agreed and said that was a profound statement. Then he introduced himself to me. He said his name was Roger McGuinn. I asked him where he was from and he said Chicago. I told him that I, too, was originally from Chicago. I then asked him what he was returning back from. He said that he was a Chicagoan who was returning home from Europe. He said he learned to play the guitar at the Old Town School of Folk Music. He asked me if I had heard of the band the Byrds. Of course I said that I had, but in reality, the name was just a distant recollection. Anyway, he said that he’d given some lectures and would be giving another lecture the next day, today, in the Royal Court Theatre. He encouraged me to come to listen to him. So, fast forward to this morning after I got up and had breakfast I went back to my stateroom and looked up the name Roger McGuinn and the Byrds. Holy smokes, Mr. Tambourine Man! I am so ignorant when I’m out of my element! Roger McGuinn is one of the most famous Folk Rock musicians and his band, the Byrds, had a whole slew of number one records. I almost feel ashamed of my ignorance! During the lecture, he explained that he had just accomplished a European 3 month 36 concert tour and was returning home to Chicago. He played his guitar and sang several songs during the lecture including this one, An Irish Blessing. I would never have met this brilliant song writer and seemingly good guy all around if I had not been staring fondly at my martini olives. So, enjoy your lives, my friends!
