Please like to keep me in your newsfeed What is depression? The dictionary defines it as severe, typically prolonged, feelings of despondency and dejection. Probably a very good description. And sadly, as a counsellor and hypnotherapist, I am able to see that the one in four people suffer with depression at some point in ther lives statistic is true. Typically when clients come to me with help for depression, we have several sessions in order to help them overcome their negative thoughts and feelings, and put their life on a path that is right for them. There are however some helpful hints and tips I give them alongside therapy that I want to share today. 1. Firstly - get outside. The daylight helps keep your internal clock set. Also, fresh air is great for you. And when the sun is shining like it is today, its guaranteed to help you feel at least a little bit better and more motivated. 2. A little bit of exercise. Doesnt mean necessarily going for a run or exerting yourself too much, but even just twenty minutes of exercise in the house or a brisk walk that increases your heart rate helps work to release stress. 3. A healthy diet and vitamin supplements (check with your pharmacist or doctor about the latter.) Not only does eating comfort foods such as chocolate or crisps help you to gain weight and thus feel worse, they also arent feeding your brain the nutrients it needs to function properly. Crunchy veggies and fish andn lean meats are also really tasty and many people enjoy cooking. 4. Socialise. This is harder said than done when we are feeling depressed, as sitting talking to people is the last thing we can be bothered to do, or want to do. But just giving ourselves that extra push to communicate with people honestly does help and in talking, we lose that sense of isolation that is so common with depression. 5. Lastly - talk to yourself (naturally not in public!) but positive affirmations are really powerful in changing our way of thinking. Remembering what you admire about yourself is a great way to start, so for example I am a kind person, I have a good heart, and I will overcome this state of mind. Please remember that whilst these tips are a great way to start feeling better about yourself and overcome your negative feelings, please contact your GP or a counsellor if you feel that you need to, or if you are having any harmful thoughts.
