If you’re a South African that has IMMIGRATED and acquired foreign citizenship by means of a voluntary and formal act WITHOUT having applied for and been granted permission for Dual Citizenship by SA Dept. of Home Affairs PRIOR to acquiring the foreign citizenship, then you are no longer a citizen of SA. The South African Citizenship Act provides for retention of South African citizenship PRIOR to the acquisition of a foreign citizenship, not after! A condition for voluntarily and formally acquiring foreign citizenship for all South African citizens aged 18 years or older is that they must apply for and be granted permission to retain their South African citizenship PRIOR to the acquisition of a foreign citizenship. If you do not fall into this category then this does not affect you. This is what the current laws state, quoted from Dept. Home Affairs website: Quote… “Automatic loss of citizenship: Unless you have been granted retention of your South African citizenship prior to acquiring another citizenship, you will lose your South African citizenship automatically if you are 18 years and older and have obtained the citizenship of another country by a voluntary and formal act, other than marriage, or are serving in the armed forces of another country (where you are also a citizen) and that country is at war with South Africa”. unquote Never say that you’ll never want to return to SA, it’s your birth right and life has too many twists and turns to say never!
