Please note the following weather warning from the MetService: Subject: Weather Event - 24 September Good afternoon MetService and NIWA are urging Aucklanders to be on the alert following a strong wind and rain warning for this afternoon and tonight. NIWA have predicted that tides are also expected to be significantly higher than forecast and that could affect coastal regions. Please note that the locations expected to be affected is dependent on the precise track of the incoming weather system. The Auckland Emergency Coordination Centre will be activated from 1600 today until further advised. Key information Low lying coastal roads and reserves around the rest of the region are also likely to be impacted. From Tuesday afternoon to midnight the following conditions are forecast: - Damaging winds gusting to 130km/hr. - Rainfall is expected to continue falling across Auckland today with highest totals expected between midday and 9pm. - Tide levels on Auckland’s east coast will be high in the hours either side of the 11pm. - Coastal inundation will be significant between 9:30pm - 12:30am and contractors are available to respond to requests for sand-bagging and other assistance. Any reports of flooding or request for assistance should be reported to Auckland Council on 09 301 0101. Advice Vector cautions customers to be prepared for the possibility of outages with the Met Service warning of stormy weather which is predicted to hit from this afternoon. In particular, people should: - Stay well clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment and treat them as live at all times. - Watch out for falling tree branches as these can cause damage to power lines. - Avoid possible damage to electrical appliances (in the unlikely event there is a power surge when the power is restored) by switching off appliances at the wall. - Keep a torch and spare batteries handy and ensure that you have at least one telephone that does not rely on electricity for operation. - Ensure that an alternate fuel is always available for cooking (.e.g. gas for BBQ). People using medical equipment that relies on electricity should ensure they are prepared for power disruptions and if there is an immediate health threat, contact their health provider or call 111. Vector will work hard to restore power as quickly as possible, however with storms the company has to prioritise multiple demands. If you must travel, drivers are urged to take the following precautions: - Check NZ Transport website before travelling. - Headlights on. - Drive to the conditions. - Keep a safe distance from the car in front. General Advice for severe weather: - Check drains and spouting and clear any blockages. - Stay up to date with weather forecasts on TV, radio and the internet. - Bring pets indoors. - Secure rubbish bins or any other loose objects that could be a danger in strong winds, including trampolines. - Limit non essential travel. - Ensure a torch, radio and spare batteries are to hand.
