JOB TITLE Field Research, Data and Analytics (FRDA) Summer Consultant RESPONSIBILITIES OFE seeks 1-2 part-time summer consultants to support the data and research needs of the Field Research, Data and Analytics team. This is a good opportunity for a graduate student to learn about how “big data” is used and implemented in a government setting; specifically how to turn data into usable insights about financial counseling performance, management and measurement. The Consultants will work closely with our Data Associate and Database manager under guidance of the Deputy Director supporting the merging, collecting, cleaning and analyzing of data collected from a variety of project sources, ranging from our financial counseling client database to market research and various City agency collaborations. Responsibilities may include: Merging, cleaning, compiling and analyzing large participant datasets; defining and describing client profiles, debt and savings profiles and behaviors. Conducting analysis on patterns in banked and unbanked populations, savings behaviors, and financial health; comparing participant data to the overall New York City population; and exploring data to identify specific patterns in different populations and participant subgroups. Conducting literature reviews of academic research on financial counseling models and best practices, innovative programs benefiting low- and moderate-income individuals, and the use of behavioral economic principles and incentives. Providing additional data and research support to a variety of OFE activities. Candidates should be prepared to devote at least 12 weeks to the position and will be expected to work 15- 20 hours per week. This is a paid position. QUALIFICATIONS / PREFERRED SKILLS Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a research-focused graduate level degree program such as economics, finance, public policy, public administration, a social science or a related field; Background in and passion about financial inclusion and asset building; Passionate about using data to inform practice; Very strong quantitative and organizational skills; Prior experience working with large data sets strongly preferred; Highly skilled in Excel and STATA and/or SPSS; Ability to work with highly sensitive data required; Enthusiastic team player; Proactive communicator. This is a great opportunity to learn and be involved in a variety of efforts to increase the financial security of New Yorkers with low incomes. On the Programs Team, the Intern will support OFE efforts around asset building, usage of financial services, financial counseling and financial education. Working collaboratively across OFE divisions, the Programs Team Intern will have an opportunity to explore, support and generate new ideas. Responsibilities include: Assist with OFE’s promotional efforts, including conducting an audit of current OFE communications pieces and campaigns, assisting in drafting new materials, as well as developing an outreach strategy and partner network map; Conduct reviews of financial products, financial education materials, issue areas and stakeholders relevant to OFE’s initiatives; Provide programmatic support to various initiatives, including financial counseling, NYC Direct Deposit, DCA’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Campaign, the Financial Education Network and other partners that provide financial education services, the Financial Empowerment Centers and special events as needed; Draft presentations, reports, correspondence and papers as required; Candidates for the internship should be prepared to devote at least 10 weeks to the position and will be expected to work up to 35 hours per week.
