Please please please share my words: TEACH THESE BABIES TO FLOAT ON THEIR BACKS! Please, do this... if you work with a child every single time he is in the water, and you reiterate this simple trick every time - it may save a life! Put them in deep water, let go... youre standing right there --- a child NEEDS to know what will happen when he or she gets in water. So many swim lessons have mom right there, or the edge to grab a hold to ---- BAD IDEA. A kid should never learn to enjoy a pool while being dependent on a parent, or the side. Instead, teach them to flip over and float on their backs. It sounds so simple... and really it is! Flip and Float. Teach a child to do that and you are teaching them to save their own life. I could type about this for hours. Bottom line... when Vannah was 18 months old, I took her to her final swim lesson. I dressed her in a winter coat, pants, shirt and boots. The lady put Vannah in the deep end of the pool... by herself. And we watched that baby flip and float!!! Even with all those clothes on, she knew what to do! This is VITAL... dont worry about teaching them to swim, theyll drown trying to swim! Teach them to float. Teach them that when you fight the water, you get tired, and you drown. By the time she was 4, she was racing her big brother across the pool!
