We are screening a Japanese film called WANKO today a true story about a little boy who lost his dog during a volcano that erupted on the island he lived on,. The authorities evacuated the island and took everyone to Tokyo. There the boy found his dog hurt, sick, but alive --- a chance in a million. It was made into a film for tv and became an instant hit because it was not just about a little boy and his dog. What the film exemplified was family ties and loyalty. It was wonderful to see his family;s support throughout. The boy had to give up the dog to a richer family who could keep him - because he himself lived in a evacuation home where dogs were not allowed. He chose to do so though it broke his heart to abandon the dog. What happened two years later was the real miracle.
