Please read and share this article. At the time, I remember being hopeful to see what Canada’s new Prime Minister would have to say about these senseless killings. To my dismay, Harper defended Israel’s actions, calling it a “measured response”. Harper’s “measured response” statement would become a rallying cry for Israel-sympathizers worldwide defending the IDF’s actions. According to his wife, Major Paeta Hess-von Kruedener had been killed days after reporting Israeli war crimes against the Lebanese people. Stephen Harper’s Department of National Defence would then bury the inquiry on Kruedener’s killing, hiding it from the Internet. The former Liberal leader, Michael Ignatieff condemned Israel’s assault on Lebanon, calling it a “war crime”. The backlash he received was brutal, from both the media and elements within his own Party. After being slandered as an “anti-Semite”, Ignatieff retracted his statement out of fear for his political career. Of course, being a Professor in Human Rights at Harvard University did not give him any authority to call out the war crimes committed by Israel! The current conflict in Gaza has been no different. As expected, Stephen Harper has shamelessly supported this assault, however he is not alone. Moreover, it seems the Liberals learned from their experience with Ignatieff. Liberal leader, Justin Trudeau’s statement on the conflict has been profoundly disappointing, falling completely in tune with Harper’s stance. While condemning Palestinians for resisting the illegal siege, Trudeau commended Israel for trying to “minimize civilian casualties”. Since July 8th, over 1150 Palestinians have been killed, 80% of which are civilians according to the UN, and 1/3 being children. The Israeli air force has decimated several hospitals, several UNRWA schools, a rehabilitation centre for the disabled, and entire neighbourhoods. If this is what Trudeau calls minimizing civilian casualties, then he is sorely mistaken.
