Please read this: Have you been told your Vitamin D is low? You may want to read this before you begin taking Vitamin D especially if you have sarcoidosis. Vitamin D First....there is no such thing as VITAMIN D. That is a misnomer. The D in our bodies is a hormone, it is not a vitamin so calling it Vitamin D is very confusing. Its important to know its not a vitamin because when you are prescribed this vitamin supplement you are in fact being given a synthetic hormone instead. Let that sink in for a few minutes. Synthetic hormone. There are 2 Ds in our bodies...D 25 and D 1,25. One is supposed to show the amount of D in our bodies and the other is supposed to show how well its being used... in laymans terms. When you have a blood test done, the D 25 is the D that is checked as a standard test. The D 1,25 has to be specifically requested and it has to be handled in a very specific way or the results will be skewed and inaccurate. This is a more costly procedure which is why its not done as part of the standard D test. Generally speaking the baseline for D 25 is 32.0 - 100.0. Anything outside of that range is high or low, depending. If your D 25 comes back below 32, most doctors will recommend an over the counter vitamin regimen with D added, unless its too low. If thats the case theyll prescribe a supplement. Low D can cause muscle pain along with damage to the bones so its important to maintain a good D level in your body. HOWEVER, Sarcoidosis doesnt play fair and because of that, our D 25 reading can be completely inaccurate and misleading. Without doing the D 1,25 to compare, no doctor should prescribe D supplements to a Sarcoidosis patient and NO SARCOIDOSIS PATIENT SHOULD TAKE THE SUPPLEMENT WITHOUT INSISTING ON THE TWO TESTS FIRST. If you do this, you are choosing to put your internal organs and your very life at risk. I am not saying this to be funny or to over exaggerate the importance. With Sarcoidosis your body can be producing plenty of D. No supplement necessary. But because of the way the Sarcoidosis processes and works, we will get a false low reading. The truth MAY be that the Sarcoidosis is causing your D to be disregulated, not deficient. There is a huge difference. A life-threatening difference if you dont know this and pay attention to it. In order to know for sure what is going on, you need a COMPITENT lab to run the two D tests. If your D 25 is low, and your D 1,25 is high then you do not need supplements. Your body has all the D it needs to operate correctly...regardless of what the D 25 says. Its there, its just not presenting itself correctly on the tests. If your D 25 is low and your D 1,25 is normal or low, then you do need extra D - BUT, you must be very careful in taking it and have regular tests and monitoring of the 2 to make sure that as soon as its within the suggested range use is discontinued. labtestsonline.org/
