Please review the letter sent to Superintendent White at the link below. fhfjefferson.org/Images/Interior/letter%20to%20supt%20%20white.pdf It includes a flow chart showing how parents and school can request high accountability for each student while offering access to a diploma for each individual child. It is from a coalition of organizations There was a webinar today with a power point developed by Shawn Fleming, Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council. The power point explains the position of those organizations that sent it in a brief and clear way. I am happy to report that members of the Louisiana Department of Education staff have shared in conversation with a variety of folks that they are considering making changes regarding promotion at 4th and 8th grade so that the accountability test will not be the most important factor in determining promotion to the next grade for students currently eligible for LAA2.. Youll note that our proposal takes that that possible and incredibly important change developed by LDE and broadens it to include all students, no matter what test they are eligible to take and expands it to high school. LDE had a great idea there and I applaud it while supporting the expansion of that suggested first step. As the Superintendent has said it is the people who are closest to the student who should make decisions. We agree. Building on that notion, it is clear that it is the members of the Individualized Educational Planning team,(which is only an IEP team if all required members, particularly the parents and/or the student at 18, are equal participants) who are the closest to each individual child eligible for an IEP. It only makes sense then that the IEP teams determine if the student is eligible for promotion or a diploma whether or not the accountability test was passed. The webinar held today was recorded and will be made available. Well keep you updated on how/when you can access it. Please forward any constructive criticism, concerns or feedback to us to consider. Questions are welcome. Ways o d this include: posting openly on LadisAbility Talk where we can discuss publicly,(send to ladisabilitytalk@yahoogroups or hit reply to this post) or you can send it to any or all of the conveners of todays webinar and representatives of the authors of the letter sent to the Superintendent. See our e-mail addresses above. I understand that individuals may have the opportunity to sign a petition developed by parent advocates in support of the proposal. If anyone knows about the petition please share. While petitions can be an important part of a campaign to educate and inform, nothing can ever match the power of communicating with your elected representatives in-person or by phone; e-mail; text or snail mail letter. LaTEACH and LaCAN are holding Legislative Roundtables and those who can participate are encouraged to do so. Well share the dates/times and places of the roundtables. Ill be surprised if LaTEACH Area Coordinators or LaCAN Leaders dont send them as a reply to this post. Lets work together to create an equitable education system in Louisiana which will results in students with disabilities having real access to future employment.
