Please see below Orchids visual representation of a cruel and unnecessary dilemma facing some people with mental illness right here in Colorado & nationally: the mental ward or the street. While there may be some people who prefer to be homeless, most people want help and want their own place to stay that is much less dangerous than the shelters. From our perspective this is an Olmstead issue meaning Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prevents unnecessary institutionalization of people with disabilities & as local media have been reporting many people in Colorado with mental illness end up in jails and prisons. And we are going to say this just as loud as we can to the State: Homelessness is NOT part of the Recovery Movement! It may not be as sporting as involuntary commitment, but there are literally several hundred people perhaps thousands of people with mental illness on Colorado streets identified as homeless who want help. Lets help them in non-coercive ways -- we have the structures under Medicaid, including Medicaid long term care and Home & Community Based Services, to do this -- do we have the will to help the willing?
