Please send this LTE I just submitted along to friends who would be interested in Clean Energy alternatives, and do plan to come on Wednesday. I hope to see you, Frank To the Editor: Recent articles in southern Maryland newspapers have reported that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the proposed expansion of Dominion Power’s Cove Point terminal in Calvert County to liquefy and export “natural gas.” But serious questions about the health, safety, and environmental risks associated with LNG, which is 70-90 percent methane—a potent greenhouse gas—still remain. Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties would be the most impacted by the construction and operation of the huge gas-fired compressors needed to prepare American methane gas for shipment on mega-tankers to Japan and India. Export of methane could likely increase drilling for gas throughout the eastern US. The current hydraulic fracturing gas drilling process has resulted in repeated, documented incidents of water pollution and air-borne carcinogens. Gas pipelines and compressors could impact many communities in the region. On Wednesday, October 22, Sierra Club is hosting a public meeting on clean energy alternatives. Maryland “Beyond Coal” program director David Smedick will be talking about energy efficiency and clean energy alternatives such as wind and solar power generation. Please plan to come to the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus, in Bldg B, Room 113, for the program starting at 6:15 PM. Call 301-862-1149 or email ff725@yahoo for more information.
