Please send to California groups... Save > Route To: All opposition against a NP or Monument Designation for the San Gabriel Mountains Janice Rutherford (San Bernardino County Supervisor) is leaving on September18 to go speak to the Secretary of the Interior in Washington DC. What is her agenda? Does the County want a piece of the pie? The county is against a national monument, but... (See attached resolution). By adoption of this resolution, the County of San Bernardino states its support for a full Congressional and public process for potential designation of either a National Monument or National Recreation Area and requests that the Obama Administration delay any action on designation of a National Monument within San Bernardino County unless sufficient time is given for public dialogue regarding the potential impacts and benefits of such a designation. Further, San Bernardino County jurisdictions, agencies and stakeholders should be granted adequate representation on any advisory, management, or policy council that is formed pursuant to any additional federal designation. A clear message should be sent to Janice Rutherford by activist groups: NO National Park; NO Monument for San Gabriel Mountains CALL Supervisor Rutherfords Office. San Bernardino 385 N. For those who don’t know about Judy Chu’s quest to control the San Gabriel Mountains let me give you a quick synopsis. For the past two years she has been holding forums and town halls across the foothill corridor from Santa Clarita to San Bernardino to talk about her vision for a National Recreation Area. Last June she presented her legislation HR 4858 to Congress’s Commission for Natural Resources. Two weeks ago, unhappy with the lack of progress with her bill in Congress, she asked President Obama to bypass Congress and designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Within one week of making her announcement she held a hastily called public forum in Baldwin Park with high ranking public and government officials in attendance. Under a monument designation this will be the largest land grab by the Federal Government at over 700,000 acres. When combined with the proposed Rim of the Valley and the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy they will control the entire Southern California mountain range from the coast to the San Bernardino’s, Los Angeles River, Rio Hondo River and eventually connecting to the Los Padres and Cleveland National Forests. The Government will have complete oversight without any local control or input regarding water, timber and minerals. I arrived early to the forum as it has been my experience that Rep. Chu likes to bus people in to fill the seats to make the room look as though there is overwhelming support for her legislation. What I witnessed was far worse than I could image. This first bus arrived about a half hour after I did, then another and another and another. The people who came off those buses were all wearing shirt and badges supporting the Save the Mountains Forever group. There was only one problem, they didn’t speak or read in any English. Several people we spoke with throughout the groups were told that they were going on a field trip to help save the mountains; they would all get a shirt and get to see Michelle Obama. When I asked an organizer about the people that were bused in and where they came from I was told I was racist and bigoted. I later spoke with the daughter of a woman who was upset that Michelle Obama was never going to be there and they were merely being used as seat fillers. Hundreds of people who lived in the area, had an interest in the proposal and city officials were locked out so that Judy Chu could fill the seats with people who didn’t understand a word that was being said.... I call that EXPLOITATION. Congresswoman Judy Chu doesn’t have the best interests of the people she claims to represent. By going to the President and bypassing Congress she will no longer have to honor all the safeguards that were put in place for HR 4858. They can appoint anyone they want to oversee the management of the new National Monument. What do you want to bet that person is Joe Edmiston of the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, the very man the cities and COG fought to keep out of any management role of the San Gabriels?
