Please share! John Cornyns long, shameful record of increasing our taxes, debt and spending: CORNYN IS A BIG SPENDER Cornyn Has Voted to Raise the Debt Ceiling Eight Times Since entering office in 2002, Senator Cornyn has voted to raise the debt ceiling eight times (including the debt ceiling increase contained in number 1, above). Raising the debt limit only encourages reckless spending in Washington. Congress needs to cut spending and balance the budget—not continue to increase our national debt without any spending reforms or reductions. Source: FreedomWorks 2013: Cornyn Voted to Fund Obamacare through Continuing Resolution/Minibus Appropriations Roll Call 44 H.R. 933 This is the amended version of the bill containing the Continuing Resolution to fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year. The bill still funds ObamaCare, and continues to institutionalize current levels of deficit spending. In addition, the House and Senate each added several departmental appropriation bills into the C.R., bypassing regular order and the amendment process that ought to accompany each of these spending bills individually. Source: FreedomWorks 2012: Cornyn voted to kill Mike Lee’s budget Roll Call 101, S.C.Res. 44 On the Motion to Proceed: S.Con.Res. 44 - Setting forth the budget for fiscal year 2013. This is Senator Mike Lees budget proposal for fiscal year 2013, which would balance the budget in five years and would save $7 trillion over ten years. This bill also contains fundamental tax reform, with a single-rate flat tax for corporations and individuals. It also reforms Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid, curbs regulations, and caps spending. Source: FreedomWorks 2012: Cornyn voted to kill Rand Paul’s budget Roll Call 100, S.C.Res. 42 This is Senator Rand Pauls budget proposal for fiscal year 2013, which would balance the budget in five year and save over $8 trillion over ten years. This proposal, which closely resembles the one presented by the Tea Party Debt Commission in 2011, would also repeal ObamaCare, block grant Medicaid and other entitlement programs, and reform both Medicare and Social Security. It would also eliminate the Departments of Energy, Education, Housing and Urban Development, and Commerce, repeal Dodd-Frank, expand energy exploration, and privatize the TSA. In short, this is the single boldest and most effective free-market economic proposal to receive a vote in Congress. 2012: Cornyn Voted for the Fiscal Cliff Tax Hike (2012, RCV 251) The fiscal cliff was a fake crisis created by Congress and the president. Senator Cornyn voted for the infamous New Year’s Day 2013 fiscal cliff deal that raised taxes on 77 percent of U.S. households and contained no real spending cuts. Source: FreedomWorks 2011: Cornyn voted to kill Rand Paul’s budget Roll Call 80S.C.Res. 20 On the Motion to Proceed: S.Con.Res. 20 - Senator Rand Pauls FY 2012 budget This is Senator Rand Paul’s FY 2012 budget proposal, which would balance the federal budget in five years without raising taxes. It would result in a $19 billion surplus in the first year, without cutting Social Security, Medicare, or Veterans’ Affairs. Source: FreedomWorks 2011: Cornyn voted to let Obama raise the debt ceiling three times Roll Call 123, S. 365 On the Motion to Concur: S. 365 - Budget Control Act of 2011 The Senate passed a bill that allowed a debt increase of up to $2.5 trillion with no spending reduction required in Fiscal Year 2012. The bill also set up a “supercommittee” of twelve members of Congress that would meet in secret to negotiate a deficit reduction of $1.2 trillion over ten years. The bill would grant President Obama the authority to raise the debt ceiling up to three times, with the caveat that these requests would be subject to a resolution of disapproval which could bar his request. The bill also requires a “sequestration” or automatic reduction of $1.2 trillion over ten years if no other agreement is reached by 2013. ACU opposes automatic debt limit increases with no congressional action required and opposed this bill. The bill passed the Senate on August 2, 2011 by a vote of 74-26. Source: ACU 2009: Cornyn voted to hand out taxpayer-backed mortgages Roll Call 48, H.R. 1 On the Motion: S.Amdt.353 - The Fix Housing First Amendment The Ensign/McConnell “Fix Housing First” amendment would offer government backed fixed mortgages at 4% to “any credit worthy” borrower either to purchase a new home or refinance. This plan, which reportedly could cost as much as $200 billion dollars, is a flagrant misuse of taxpayer funds and in essence creates a new housing entitlement fund. This amendments cost violates the pay-as-you-go requirements of the Budget Act, so a point of order was raised against the amendment. The vote being scored would waive that point of order and allow the amendment to proceed to a vote on final passage. Source: FreedomWorks 2009: Cornyn voted for a budget to increase the national debt, again Roll Call 210, H.R. 2346 On the Conference Report: H.R. 2346 Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2009 A bill making supplemental appropriations for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009, and for other purposes. Source: FreedomWorks 2009: Cornyn voted for a budget to increase the national debt Roll Call 202, H.R. 2346 On Passage: HR 2346 Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2009 A bill making supplemental appropriations for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009, and for other purposes. This would add to the national debt. Source: FreedomWorks 2008: Cornyn voted for Stimulus Rebates HR 5140 (Roll Call 10). The Senate passed a bill designed to “stimulate” the economy by giving taxpayers a one-time advance tax refund that was phased out for “wealthy” people with an annual salary of more than $75,000. The bill also encouraged Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to make larger risky loans. ACU opposed the bill, considering the stimulus provisions ineffective and other provisions risky, but it passed February 7, 2008 by a vote of 81-16. Source: ACU 2008: Cornyn Voted for TARP HR 3221 (Roll Call 96). The Senate passed a bill providing for a taxpayer bailout of the mortgage entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. A $4 billion trust fund was created allowing grants to ACORN and other activist organizations and requiring everyone in the mortgage industry to submit to a federal fingerprint registry. ACU opposed this vast expansion of federal involvement in the real estate industry, but the bill passed April 10, 2008 by a vote of 84-12. Source: ACU 2008: Cornyn Voted for TARP -- Again (RCV 213) Senator Cornyn voted for the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street. Taxpayers should have never been forced to pay for the mistakes of the big banks. He continues to make excuses for why he voted for the massive bank bailout. Cornyn has defended his vote, saying in 2010 that, “Im responsible and proud of the vote I cast at the time because I thought it was a public necessity.” Source: FreedomWorks 2008: Cornyn Voted for the Farm Bill Veto Override HR 6124 (Roll Call 151). The Senate passed, over the president’s veto, a farm bill that continues subsidies for farmers making up to $2 million annually and for crops that have increased in price. ACU opposes federal interference in the nation’s agriculture, but the bill was passed June 18, 2008 by a more than two-thirds Constitutional majority vote of 80-14. Source: ACU 2008: Cornyn Voted to Sacrifice Private Health Care to Medicare HR 6331 (Roll Call 169). The Senate adopted a bill that would discriminate against private insurance carriers under Medicare, keeping doctor payments (and taxpayer costs) high. ACU opposed the bill, but it was passed July 9, 2008 by a vote of 69-30. Source: ACU 2007: Cornyn Voted to Increase the Federal Minimum Wage (2007, RCV 42) Senator Cornyn voted for the Fair Minimum Wage Act that increased the federal minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour in 2007. Raising the minimum wage is a bad idea because it reduces employment especially among low-skilled workers. The cost of raising the minimum wage is passed onto consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services. Source: FreedomWorks 2005: Cornyn supported the “Bridge to Nowhere” Roll Call 262H.R. 3058Amdt. On the Amendment: S.Amdt.2165 To stop the bridge to nowhere Coburn Amdt. No. 2165, As Modified; To make a perfecting amendment. Senator Coburns amendment to block construction of the “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska, the leading symbol of earmark abuse in the 109th Congress Source: FreedomWorks 2003: “Cornyn Voted Against the Death Tax” Repeal S. Con. Res. 23 (Roll Call 62) This amendment to the Budget Resolution would have accelerated the repeal of the Estate Tax from 2010 to 2009. ACU supported the amendment. It passed 51-48 on 20 March 2003. The bill was passed (51-48) Source: ACU 2003: Cornyn Voted for the Biggest Medicare Expansion in 40 Years HR 1 (Roll Call 459) This so-called Medicare “reform” marked the greatest expansion of a federal program in almost 40 years. The $400 billion measure will add trillions to the un-funded liability of the Medicare program, provides only the illusion of patient choice, and will The bill was passed (54-44) Source: ACU 2003: Cornyn Voted for Medicare Part D, Again Senator Cornyn voted to pass Medicare Part D, a massive entitlement expansion that conservatives rightly predicted would tremendously expand the deficit and add trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities to the federal rolls.
