It is understood police used a number of investigative tools to snare the men, including examining mobile phone usage as well as studying clothing seen in the sick videos. Sources told the Mirror scores of cats are thought to have been stolen before being cruelly torn apart for sport. It is understood the dogs were not used for fighting, but for taking on other animals, starting with cats, to make them vicious before moving on to badgers. It is believed the USPCA was contacted by at least 50 people about missing cats while the police received further reports. East Belfast MP Naomi Long was also contacted by residents worried about pets vanishing from the area. Det Insp Peter Mullan and USPCA chief executive Stephen Philpott said the cruelty was among the worst they have ever encountered. Mr Philpott described the case as “one of the vilest examples of pre-meditated abuse the charity has come across in many years”. DI Mullan added he believed the cruelty was “widespread”. Jeremiah Kirkwood, 43, Christopher, 23, and 20-year-old Wayne originally faced a total of 15 charges, but after admitting three counts each, the remaining charges were left on the books.
