Please stop with the false equivalence between neighborhood - TopicsExpress

Please stop with the false equivalence between neighborhood crime/murder/etc and protesting of police abuse/crime. Here is why it is different, and must be solved differently: They are related problems, but they are different problems with different solutions. We should all be trying to do something about the conditions and attitudes that create crime. Many ARE, but I dont see any of the folks making these comparisons of false equivalence lifting a finger to support (by sharing, discussing) efforts in the community that are occurring, or seeking those out that are trying to do something. But, do you see the added, and HUGE issue, of mistreatment, abuse and murder by those who are, by law and by morals, supposed to have the public trust as the source of their authority? There is a large difference between a gang and the police becoming a gang. When cops behave like thugs, it is worse, and actually contributes even further to crime. The power of the state being abused contributes to crime within the community because, now, there is nowhere to turn - thus intensifying the catabolism within the community. There is a bottling of the rage that comes from centuries of oppression, mistreatment coupled with existing in a culture at large (United States) obsessed with individual power, money, violence. What happens when you shake something volatile inside of a bottle? You want witnesses to crimes? Lets make sure the people we are to witness TO can be trusted. Still further, the added institutional power behind the police necessitates public spectacle to solve. Conversely, the problem of crime among citizens requires every day, quieter community action inclusive of relationship building, cooperative economics, support of the idea and practice of family and community.
