Please support my campaign for gender equality Nothing will ever replace a good teacher. Ultimately it is the teachers who determine our collective ability to innovate, to invent and to find solutions for tomorrow. The UN theme for World Teachers day 2011 was “Teachers for gender equality”. The Union Budget for 2014 has provision for including “Gender Equality Education” in school curriculum. Since gender attitudes enter and get reinforced through education, teachers are a powerful force to address gender injustices around the world. Gender sensitization is a long and painful process requiring not only learning of new perspectives but also unlearning of old ones. In a state like Kerala which have achieved gender equality in access to education, it is now time to institutionalize the problem of gender sensitivity among teachers. I am conducting a state level Action Research on Gender Sensitivity among Primary School Teachers. The Indian Council for Social Science Research, New Delhi is assisting me in this mission. The study intends to cover maximum number of teachers. The main objectives of the study is to impart gender equality education to primary school teachers by conducting gender sensitization training workshops, to raise primary school teacher’s awareness on prevailing gender issues and to understand the level of gender sensitivity among primary school teachers. Since we are concerned how teachers act as change agents the sample size will be determined during the course of the study and the criteria for sample selection will be centred on the teachers’ interest or involvement in gender equity issues. In this regard I will be travelling across Kerala for the next six months. Dear friends, I request your whole hearted support for this campaign for gender equality.
