Please take a few minutes to read this very interesting article on a recent segment of 60 Minutes regarding aging, specifically in the 90+ growing demographic. My biggest concern, one that really hits home for me and was noted in this article, is an issue that 60 Minutes left out. When I watched the program, I could not help but think of how detrimental it is going to be, IF we are living longer, IF we don’t get a grip on the potential of an Alzheimer epidemic. There is no excitement or achievement in reaching 90+ physically if brain cells are tangled and individuals are physically functioning but the mental capacities are gone. I have the agony of watching my mother, who is by the way, physically healthy as a horse, suffer from Alzheimer’s. Sadly enough, like many diseases, there are measures to help prevent, and even cures that go under the radar for the sake of the almighty dollar and not for the sake of the human factor. This very cruel disease, however, will be best addressed NOW should means of longevity increase! Let me emphasize a quote from the article, There is probably no greater threat to the miracle of longevity than Alzheimer’s. A health challenge that becomes a social crisis will, by 2030, become a fiscal nightmare if we stay on today’s path. This issue MUST be addressed now - for the sake of humanity, NOT the almighty dollar.
