Please take a minute to read, thanks! :) We all know that one plus one equals two but did you know that in the cat world one plus one can equal many different numbers? Let me explain. One un-owned free roaming cat arrives on your doorstep. You are a Good Samaritan and you feed her. You figure you can’t afford to have her spayed but you can afford a bag of food once a month. For awhile all is good. Then this sweet cat comes of age and finds herself a boyfriend…..that’s where the trouble begins. That’s where one plus one no longer equals two. The cat gets pregnant, gives birth and about six weeks later brings you anywhere from one to eight more little mouths to feed. And the process will be repeated until you are now buying a couple big bags of food a week in order to keep the cats from starving. It’s at this point you realize that paying $150-160 to have that first cat spayed would have been the cheaper and more humane option but alas, it’s too late for that. Antigonish is lucky to have three organizations that deal with the welfare of cats but they too are overwhelmed with the number of cats and kittens needing help. None of these organizations are going to be able to take a multitude of felines off your hands. So what is the solution? We as a society need to be proactive instead of reactive. You must spay/neuter that one un-owned free roaming cat that shows up on your property. When you think of the consequences you will face can you really NOT afford to have the first one “fixed”? Carma is not only willing to assist with existing colonies but would also like to be able to help PREVENT colonies from starting in the first place as they understand the true cost associated with not having that first cat surgically altered. You’ll never know if we can help until you ask so contact us at carma.ant@gmail. That being said, we’d also like to share our success with you. On March 14th Carma had its 500th cat surgically altered. That is a huge accomplishment and we would like to thank each and every person who supported us and made it possible. We are making a difference; one cat at a time. Our TNR Service is ramping up for the Spring and we have a number of cats already signed up. As you know we can only assist if we have the funds to do so. Therefore, we also have our Sponsor a Carma Cat/Kitten program up and running again this year. If you cannot adopt, foster or volunteer please consider supporting us financially through this program. The donation is $10 a month which is the cost of a coffee a week but it makes a huge difference to a cat in need and you will receive a tax receipt which will reduce the amount of tax you owe to the government….Bonus!! Thanks again for your support and we sign off with “Keep Calm and Meow On”!
