Please take just a minute and sign this petition to restore the NC Historic Preservation Tax Credits! These tax credits, which create economic opportunity across the state, have brought nearly $1.5 billion in private investment into North Carolina since 1998. In Smithfield alone, eight rehabilitation projects have been undertaken. - Hood Building, currently Narron, OHale and Whittington, P.A. - Hood-Spiers Building, currently Jewels Formals - Austin Building, currently Law Office of Antoan Whidbee & Mary Sinno, Raymond James Financial Services, and Austin Manor - 108 S. Third Street, currently Swank Photo Studio - Capital Department Store, currently The (Smithfield) Herald and Gandolfos Deli, Smithfield NC - 105 S. Third Street, former office of Stewart and Schmidlin - Smithfield Masonic Lodge, currently AMF Bakery Systems - 115-117 S. Third Street, currently Stewart and Schmidlin, PLLC There are still several buildings in Downtown Smithfield that need rehabilitation and would be eligible for tax credits. The state legislature did not renew historic preservation tax credits in 2014, and the program expired on December 31. Leaders from across the state, including Governor Pat McCrory, have called on the legislature to introduce a bill to bring back the program.
