Please take the time to read this email, and forward it to the list of parliamentary email addresses at the bottom. The standing committee is due to hand its final report in this September. Changing to cannabis legislation is something that will have an impact in the Australian community, a positive change. Please feel free to share this with your networks. To The Honourable Member; I am writing to you to express my concern over the lack of forward motion toward law reform to allow medical access to cannabis for ill and terminally ill people in NSW. The NSW Government was informed by its own Standing Committee Inquiry (number 4) Interim Report into the issue that this need is an urgent one, and that this access should be allowed, yet the government has failed to act on these recommendations. The ongoing refusal of successive NSW governments to address this issue in any meaningful way is shameful. People should not be treated as criminals for treating their illness in an efficacious manner; people should not fear prosecution when they are already dealing with debilitating illnesses. Imagine the life of young Tara O’Connell, a seven year old girl with Dravet’s Syndrome. Having five to ten seizures a day for the entirety of her short life, conventional medicine has let Tara down. Once she had begun using medical cannabis (from Mullaways Medical Cannabis Pty Ltd), within ten days she was seizure free. On the first day of Tara using this miraculous medicine the number of seizures recorded had halved, (as reported on Channel 7’s Today Tonight, youtube/watch?v=SHs4BqL1MUw#at=545) Tara’s mother was asked by the Today Tonight host, “What’s it like to have your little girl back?” The response from Tara’s mother was heart-wrenching, “I don’t think we’ve got her back, I think this is the first time we’ve ever seen her. We’ve finally met the real Tara. Tara’s been having seizures since she was six weeks old; we’ve never known anything else.” How do you explain your personal lack of action on this important social reform to people in similar circumstances? How do you explain your government’s ongoing neglect of ill and terminally ill people that would benefit from legal access to this natural and efficacious medicine? Will your government act with compassion and initiate the required changes to allow people like Tara to have a quality of life that conventional medicine just can’t deliver when the final report is delivered? I look forward to your responses to these important questions, and your action on this essential compassionate reform.
