Please take time to read the demands of the Oilworkers (as copied from a national tabloid) below and see how these bunch of over indulged ‘privileged few’ want to take us all for a ride. Why have they never protested to the National Assembly? Why go on a strike on the eve of a Christian holiday? Is it to punish Christians like the last one when people had to sell their things at the motor parks to ferry themselves back to the cities? At a time when we have a lame duck National Assembly and members are fighting for their political future, who will go and seat to deliberate on the PIB bill? Is it because Elo Ogbonde a Zonal labor Officer is a union member that her Employers TotalFina cannot transfer her? Was she employed to be a Unionist or a staff of Totalfina? There is no justification why the road to the functional refineries should be bad . Can the oil workers be funded with what they produce from the refineries? Is this not politically motivated as the season of the strike will have maximum negative impact on the Jonathan administration? We wish to remind the Oil Workers that this action will PUNISH the ordinary people and they do not DESERVE it and MUST be called off IMMEDIATELY!!! The nation’s oil workers coming under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) have embarked on an indefinite strike for the following reasons… 1. Inability of government to reduce pump prices of petroleum products in line with the decline in the prices of crude oil in the global market. 2. To ensure that the government evolved new strategies to combat pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft. 3. Delay in the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), 4. Non-implementation of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act to reflect Nigerians in management positions and expatriate quota law, 5. Appalling state of access roads to refineries and oil depots’ facilities, 6. Insecurity all over the country that has led to the death of their members, 7. Appointments in government agencies in disregard to succession planning, 8. Compulsory deduction from workers’ salaries for the National Housing Fund (NHF), 9. Casualisation and contract staffing and unfair labour practice by companies and government agencies. 10. The govern¬ment has refused to honour all engagements and agreements reached with them on all issues of concern. 11. Refusal to do Turn-around maintenance of the refineries and ensuring adequate supply of crude oil to the refineries to ensure that they function effectively and efficiently. 12. Address the ongoing high rate divestment in the industry and its attendant job losses. 13. An imme¬diate conversion of all contract staff to regular staff in accor¬dance with the approved Con¬tract, Casual and Outsourcing in the Oil and Gas Industry Guidelines 14. NUPENG President, Igwe Achese said specifically in Okrika, Rivers State yesterday that Total Nigeria would have to recall its member, Elo Og¬bonde, a Zonal officer elected for the Port Harcourt zone in July this year, but subsequently posted out to Lagos in August.
