Please welcome Nicole M. Mitchell to Art for Life! Mitchell is a creative flutist, composer, and an educator at the University of California at Irvine in the Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology graduate program. Michelle is the founder of critically acclaimed Black Earth Ensemble and Black Earth Strings. She composes for contemporary ensembles of varying instrumentation and size (from solo to orchestra) while incorporating improvisation and a wide aesthetic expression. As a flutist, she develops new improvisational languages through the coupling of her voice with the instrument. Michelle was the 2011 recipient of both the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts and 3Arts Award for Music Composition, and has been named “the most important jazz flutist of her generation” (AllAboutJazz). She was selected as Top Jazz Flutist by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association in 2010 and 2011. Her work has been featured on National Public Radio and numerous publications including Ebony, Jazz Times, and American Legacy. Michelle has worked with contemporary musicians including George Lewis, Steve Coleman, James Newton, Ramsey Lewis, Anthony Davis, Bill Dixon, and Roscoe Mitchell to name just a few luminaries.
