Please write and support this legislation to fix poor policy, particularly in counties like Cochise. Did you know that 19% of the population over 18 in Cochise County are veterans? I didnt until today. (ljp) -------------------------------- ISSUE: The Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014 implementation guidelines (currently in interim form) state that in order to seek care from non-VA service providers, veterans must live more than 40 miles from the closest VA medical facility, to include VA community-based outpatient clinics, even if that facility cannot provide the care that the veteran requires. So even with the new access cards arriving in the mail now, veterans in our community will still have to drive (or be driven) to Tucson for many health care services. This is not effective, safe, or good for morale, particularly when quality care is available close to home. The hospital leadership and Board of Trustees are working with Arizona Senator McCain on fixing the policy. The Senator has co-sponsored S. 207 to clarify that the 40 mile rule applies to VA facilities that can provide the care the veteran needs, but the fix will take time. You CAN HELP NOW by urging our local VA leadership to negotiate service contracts with our new hospital and its expanded service lines so that veterans can be seen locally. A proposed message and contact information is provided below for your use – either email or regular mail. ACTION: Request you, and your service organization, send the message below to the Director of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System Mr. Jonathan Gardner, MPA, FACHE, email: [email protected] OR 3601 S. 6th Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85723. “Veterans represent more than 19% of Cochise county population over the age of 18, a much higher ratio than any where else in the state. These veterans deserve access to health care and mental health services close to home. Requiring veterans to drive to Tucson for care that is available locally is not effective, safe or good for morale. The opening of a new hospital in Sierra Vista with expanded service lines, to include mental health and cardiology, offers the VA opportunities to better support our veterans. I ask that you act now to negotiate service contracts with the hospital and it’s medical and mental health professionals so that veterans can get their care close to home!”
