Plight of 4 Thais in Nigeria not known The plight of the four Thai nationals abducted by a gang of of kidnappers in southern Nigeria on Friday is not yet known, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said on Sunday. Mr Surapong was referring to a report that the kidnappers on a boat attacked the four Thais and two Nigerians in the Buguma area while they were on their way to work at a fish farm in southern state of Rivers. The report said the kidpappers sped off and later dropped the two Nigerians somewhere. One of the Nigerians reportedly drowned. The two Thais were still with them, it said. Mr Surapong said the Foreign Ministry has not obtained any more information on the plight of the four Thais, who reportedly work at a state-own fish farm but operated by the Israeli firm Onida. Narong Sasithorn, director-general of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, has been instructed to immediately contact the Nigerian ambassador to Thailand to convey a message to the government of Nigeria asking it, before taking any action, to take into consideration the safety of the four Thais. Mr Surapong said it was still not clear whether the kidnapping of the four Thais was for ransom or any other purposes. The ministry is waiting for more information about this. Somchai Paocharoen, the Thai ambassador to Nigeria, has kept a close watch on the situation. Authorities concerned have also been instructed to get information on all Thai workers in Nigeria. The only information on hand is that the four kidnapped Thais are workers of an agriculture firm run by Israel, Mr Surapong said. (Bangkok Post)
