Pocket Devotion Acts 16:16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. Thoughts for Today: Some time ago, two young men I know, who are brothers, struck out on their own. Within a very short time their business became very successful. They became prideful and boastful -- after all, arent a fat profit, Mercedes Benz and opulent home proof their business practices worked (the end justifies the means)? The brothers used their experience in the mortgage and real estate businesses, to buy multiple houses, rent them out, then refinance them to get cash to pay the shortfall between the mortgage payments and the rents received. A pretty clever scheme except for a moral dilemma: it required fraudulently obtaining multiple real estate loans. Of course the brothers made money every time a house was bought, financed, rented out, and refinanced. It was a very profitable business until something happened -- house prices did not appreciate, lending standards tightened (new loans were no longer available), and their house of cards came crashing down upon them. You can only imagine the legal and financial ruin the brothers brought upon themselves as well as their investors. How did they get themselves into such a mess? One word: greed. Why didnt they get out? Because, like the owners of the slave girl from our passage today, they were earning a great deal of money. Isnt it funny how our moral compass gets off when money is involved, especially a lot of money. In all probability the owners of the slave girl were not Christians, though it would not surprise me if they were, as I have seen many Christians involved in questionable businesses -- sometimes it only depends on how much money can be made. What about you? Would a lot of money compromise your morals? Questions to Ponder: Heres a good question for you: Would you own stock in a company that conducts business against your Christian beliefs? Have you checked your portfolio recently? Are you any different than the owners of the slave girl if you own stock in a decidedly un-Christian business no matter how big it is? Maybe its time investigate and re-evaluate.
