Poetry in parks Can you imagine a society in which poets published poems on weatherproof digital screens in parks and other public places. What kind of discourse would we have then about political poetry? The media establishment would be alarmed because poetry has always been the cutting edge of news, the real news of a society. I think of this whenever I see a small group of relentless veterans in an uptown park in Hudson, our county seat. There they are week after week protesting Endless War Inc. To their right is a large clock donated by a civic group. Behind them a fountain donated by a nursery. Why not an elegant digital monitor offering poems, perhaps video poems, which are often called moving poems? I have a feeling this would go a long way towards standing up to the encroachments of militarized cops suppressing lawful dissent. Here we could have the lawful dissent of poets, or their lawful approbation. We name park benches for people. We set out flags in parks. Flowers, music. Why not poetry? And why should the libraries not embrace this idea? In fact, the libraries could easily do it themselves.
