Point of View Just yesterday I posted a heroic story about a woman and neighbor of mine whose husband died suddenly at 40 leaving her with five kids to raise on her own. I chronicled how she has built her own cleaning business and more than survived through hustle and hard work without the benefit of education, family or government assistance. A number of people have commented on how inspiring Cheryls story is and that got me thinking. Why doesnt our culture celebrate people like her more? We used to be the can do culture. Now we are bombarded daily even hourly with stories of victims who cant get a break and who are in desperate need of yet one more government program. I like to think I am at least as compassionate as the next guy and I want to help those who cant help themselves, but I honestly believe our collective culture conspires to convince people that it is no use even trying. The rich just get richer and the poor just get poorer and our only hope is Uncle Sam. Setting aside politics I not only think this is a demoralizing philosophy to be teaching our young people, but as Cheryl and the millions of immigrants coming here show so well it is demonstrably untrue.
