Points about paper I am trying to put my LBB collection into - TopicsExpress

Points about paper I am trying to put my LBB collection into order with a number of purchased items being placed in the main collection. This brings up a number of curiosities. The first issue is the card type used for the wrapper. a. I have come across LBB #1310 ‘Snyder-Gray murder echoes’ with a yellow crinkled wrapper made from an exceptionally thick card with very little flexibility. (photos attached). In a collection of 8000 LBBs, I have not seen any other similar examples. b. War paper apology. Moderately common “Sorry, we had to use this cover, because emergency conditions made it impossible to get standard cover stock. We’ll switch back immediately after receiving new supplies’. A nice apology on #266 ‘Further adventures of Sherlock Holmes’. Comments: Apologies are always on LBBs with only one staple??? Any comments? The paper appears to have lasted as well or better than other papers. Any comments? Many other LBBs with a similar brown paper do not have an apology. Any comments? c. Early LBBs, say of Ten Cent Pocket series or later, are quite thick. Every now and again one comes across two identical books (same number of pages etc) that are very different in thickness. This must indicate that Haldeman-Julius varied his paper supply between thicker and thinner papers. Any comments about the different papers used in LBBs either for wrappers or for the interiors?? Regards Bill
