Poison resistant super lice are becoming the scourge of elementary schools. Lice myths ------------------- Lice do not hop, jump or fly. They crawl, and you catch them through direct head-to-head contact or, less commonly, by sharing hairbrushes, hats or coats. Putting Vaseline or mayonnaise on your head won’t work to get rid of lice, says Lice Squad founder Dawn Mucci. Beware of “crazy concoctions.” Flat ironing doesn’t work either — it doesn’t get close enough to the scalp, where eggs are laid, and you could burn yourself or your child. Lice eggs are not white. They are brown or caramel coloured. Hatched eggs are opaque, like cling wrap. Anyone can get head lice. There is no correlation between lice and cleanliness or social status. In fact, lice do not like dirty hair (they seem to prefer clean, long, thick hair). Lice can’t infest pillows or bedding. They can only live for one to two days away from a human head. Washing or bleaching every surface your child came into contact with is not necessary. Wash clothes and bedding, but simply gather favourite toys or stuffed animals into a plastic bag for two weeks (the time it takes for eggs to hatch and subsequent live lice to die).
