Poland is the only town of CASS Township, being established at the same time as the township in 1841. Several mercantile businesses operated in Poland, with at least five physicians residing in the immediate area. At one time, Poland was a dry town by vote of the residents, but later saloons opened in the vicinity, one notably named “The Symposium”. According to a 1925 article in the Brazil Daily Times, “Cass Township, with Poland as its community center and trading point, is remarkable for its thrift and for many years has been without paupers, persons needing poor relief and delinquent taxpayers. The fertile farmlands, among the best of Clay County, produce bounteous crops, and this little township does considerably more than its share in feeding the rest of the world.” This same article noted that the regional sales representative for Star automobiles was located in Poland (the Star Car was a competitor of the Ford Model T).
