Poland officially contributes to the restoration of the Nativity Church in Bethlehem. A signing ceremony at the office of President Abbas sealed Poland’s participation in the international renovation efforts of one of Christianity’s top historic sites. An official agreement was signed on September 10th, between the Representative of Poland in Palestine, Ms. Bukowska-McCabe and the Chairman of the Presidential Committee for Renovation of the Roof of the Nativity Church, Mr. al-Bandak. The Nativity Church in Bethlehem, constructed in the 3rd century by St. Helena over the birthplace of Jesus Christ, is one of the oldest continuously functioning churches in the world. Since 1853 the Church has been governed and looked after by three Christian denominations: Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and the Armenians. Since the roof requires urgent restoration, in 2008 the Palestinian Authority (with the acceptance of the 3 ruling Churches) established a Committee for Renovation of the Roof of the Nativity Church, tasking it with fundraising. To date the Committee has raised over 2.5 mln USD from the PA, foreign governments (France, Spain, Vatican, Russia, Hungary, Greece, and Poland) and individual donations.
